Doctors at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors put in about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in point of fact several podiatry training programs lie within these academic institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received extensive health care education with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are trained to manage issues varying from standard afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more intricate for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical education which give them the skill crucial to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to create shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against many troubles which the feet routinely encounter.
