Medical doctors here at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists spend around a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and as a matter of fact many podiatry training programs are contained within these academic institutions. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received considerable medical training with an emphasis on conditions concerning the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are qualified to treat difficulties varying from standard afflictions such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have thorough surgical training which give them the skill needed to execute surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities facilitates a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and minimize the risk of many problems which the feet frequently experience.
