Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Edmonton specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They invest about 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and as a matter of fact quite a number podiatry programmes are located within these institutions. Upon getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have obtained extensive medical training with a concentration on issues pertaining to the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are educated to manage problems ranging from common conditions for instance fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have significant surgical instruction which give them the expertise crucial to execute surgical treatment on those conditions that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait irregularities enables a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and avoid numerous troubles which the feet generally encounter.
