Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialise in the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend around a decade in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles conventional medical school and in fact many podiatry programmes are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have gained comprehensive medical training with an attention to on problems concerning the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are qualified to handle complications extending from usual disorders for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical training which give them the expertise needed to perform surgery on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities enables a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of many problems which the feet regularly encounter.
