Doctors at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. They devote an average of ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to usual medical school and several podiatry programs are located inside these academic institutions. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have obtained encompassing health care education with an emphasis on problems regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to treat problems varying from familiar disorders like fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more puzzling for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical education which provide them the practical experience necessary to execute surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and defend against many troubles which the feet frequently encounter.
