Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists devote an average of ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to general medical school and in point of fact numerous podiatry training programs are contained inside these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have obtained substantial healthcare education with a stress on problems involving the feet and ankles. They are trained to care for difficulties varying from familiar afflictions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more challenging such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical education which give them the prior experience essential to execute surgery on those problems that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait irregularities enables a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
