Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They put in around 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and many podiatry training programs are located within these schools. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have acquired wide-ranging healthcare training with a stress on problems involving the ankles and feet. They are instructed to address problems stretching from regular conditions for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more intricate such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical instruction which give them the prior experience needed to conduct surgery on those problems that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors additionally have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and reduce the chances of many issues which the feet typically encounter.
