Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors devote about ten years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and in reality a number of podiatry programmes are located inside these institutions. After procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received comprehensive healthcare education with an emphasis on problems concerning the feet and ankles. They are trained to treat issues extending from standard ailments for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical training which furnish them the experience necessary to conduct surgery on those complications that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems makes it easy for a Podiatrist to develop footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and prevent many problems which the feet regularly experience.
