Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. They devote approximately ten years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in fact a number of podiatry training programs are located within these schools. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received substantial medical education with an emphasis on conditions involving the ankles and feet. They are skilled to treat difficulties stretching from familiar conditions for example, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have thorough surgical instruction which provide them the experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those issues that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatric doctor to create footwear and orthotics that can provide pain relief and defend against many problems which the feet commonly encounter.
