Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. They invest an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and several podiatry programmes are contained inside these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received comprehensive medical training with a stress on problems concerning the ankles and feet. They are trained to deal with problems extending from usual ailments for instance fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are a lot more complex such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical education which furnish them the skill necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait deviations makes it easy for a Podiatrist to develop footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and help prevent many issues which the feet usually encounter.
