Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in about 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and in fact several podiatry programs are contained within these schools. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received comprehensive healthcare instruction with an emphasis on issues concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are skilled to treat concerns ranging from simple disorders such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are far more sophisticated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical training which furnish them the experience necessary to conduct surgery on those concerns that are best remedied through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait problems permits a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and defend against a large number of complications which the feet normally encounter.
