Doctors at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend about 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have gained encompassing medical training with a concentration on complications pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are taught to care for concerns extending from basic problems for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more complicated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical education which provide them the skill crucial to carry out surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait problems makes it possible for a Foot doctor to develop shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and prevent a large number of problems which the feet normally encounter.
