Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors put in approximately ten years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. Upon getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have obtained thorough medical training with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are instructed to treat concerns stretching from usual ailments such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical education which supply them the practical experience required to carry out surgery on those concerns that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it easy for a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of problems which the feet frequently experience.
