Medical doctors here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists invest an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to typical medical school and in reality many podiatry training programs are contained inside these academic institutions. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive medical education with an emphasis on concerns concerning the ankles and feet. They are trained to treat problems varying from basic afflictions like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more obscure like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have thorough surgical training which provide them the experience vital to conduct surgical treatment on those complications that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatric physician to develop shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and help prevent many complications which the feet routinely encounter.
