Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Doctors invest approximately ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and numerous podiatry programs are located within these schools. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have gained substantial healthcare instruction with a stress on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are taught to address conditions extending from regular disorders such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have thorough surgical training which supply them the expertise required to conduct surgical treatment on those conditions that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations facilitates a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and minimize the risk of many conditions which the feet generally experience.
