Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They put in about 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in reality several podiatry training programs are located inside these academic institutions. Upon acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have obtained encompassing healthcare instruction with a main focus on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are trained to handle issues varying from standard disorders for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more obscure for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have thorough surgical training which furnish them the experience crucial to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations facilitates a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and help prevent many problems which the feet typically encounter.
