Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend an average of 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to usual medical school and in fact many podiatry programs lie within these academic institutions. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have obtained extensive medical education with a focus on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are studied to deal with difficulties stretching from usual disorders for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more sophisticated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have significant surgical instruction which give them the experience essential to perform surgical treatment on those issues that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and avoid numerous conditions which the feet normally encounter.
