Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists devote an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in fact various podiatry programmes are located within these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have received extensive medical training with a main focus on complications involving the ankles and feet. They are educated to deal with complications ranging from conventional afflictions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more sophisticated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical training which give them the experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those conditions that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute likewise have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and prevent many problems which the feet frequently experience.
