Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They devote approximately 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to general medical school and in fact quite a number podiatry programs are contained inside these institutions. Upon acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive health care education with an emphasis on issues involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to handle complications ranging from common problems such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more puzzling such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical instruction which provide them the experience required to perform surgical treatment on those concerns that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait problems enables a Foot doctor to develop footwear and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and prevent many complications which the feet commonly encounter.
