Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles regular medical school and in fact many podiatry programmes are contained inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have received extensive medical education with an importance on problems concerning the feet and ankles. They are qualified to treat issues extending from standard problems like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more perplexing for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have thorough surgical education which give them the experience required to perform surgery on those issues that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities makes it possible for a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and avoid numerous issues which the feet usually experience.
