Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and quite a number podiatry programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have acquired comprehensive health care training with an emphasis on problems involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are instructed to care for problems stretching from simple disorders such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more sophisticated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical instruction which furnish them the expertise needed to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities permits a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and defend against countless complications which the feet frequently encounter.
