Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialise in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. They spend about 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in reality numerous podiatry programs are located inside these schools. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received wide-ranging medical training with an emphasis on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to care for concerns stretching from conventional problems like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more complex including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical instruction which provide them the prior experience required to carry out surgery on those conditions that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and help prevent countless conditions which the feet regularly experience.
