Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists put in approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and as a matter of fact various podiatry programs lie within these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received substantial healthcare training with a focus on issues involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are taught to treat concerns extending from common disorders for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more intricate for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have considerable surgical training which give them the skill necessary to carry out surgery on those concerns that are best managed through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations enables a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and protect against many troubles which the feet frequently encounter.
