Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend around 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and in reality many podiatry programs are located inside these schools. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have gained comprehensive health care training with a main focus on problems involving the feet and ankles. They are taught to care for issues stretching from standard problems like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more intricate for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have considerable surgical training which provide them the practical experience necessary to perform surgery on those complications that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it easy for a Foot doctor to develop footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and avoid numerous conditions which the feet typically encounter.
