Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in reality several podiatry programmes are contained inside these academic institutions. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received comprehensive medical training with a concentration on concerns involving the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are studied to treat conditions varying from common ailments for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more complex like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have significant surgical training which supply them the expertise necessary to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and defend against many troubles which the feet typically experience.
