Dr.’s here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Podiatrists spend an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in point of fact several podiatry training programs lie within these schools. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received substantial medical training with an emphasis on complications concerning the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to treat complications ranging from commonplace afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are a lot more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical education which give them the experience needed to perform surgery on those complications that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait abnormalities enables a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics that can provide pain relief and defend against countless complications which the feet frequently encounter.
