Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend an average of 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs lie within these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have gained significant medical training with an importance on conditions involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are taught to treat difficulties ranging from common problems such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have considerable surgical instruction which give them the skill essential to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait problems enables a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and avoid a large number of complications which the feet typically encounter.
