Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists invest around 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes are contained inside these schools. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received considerable healthcare education with a focus on difficulties regarding the feet and ankles. They are educated to address problems varying from simple afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more complex for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical instruction which provide them the experience essential to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and reduce the chances of countless conditions which the feet commonly encounter.
