Dr.’s here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors put in an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and several podiatry training programs are located inside these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have acquired extensive medical education with an emphasis on problems concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are instructed to deal with difficulties stretching from general conditions for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more challenging for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have comprehensive surgical training which furnish them the expertise needed to perform surgical treatment on those issues that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait problems facilitates a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against many complications which the feet generally encounter.
