Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and actually many podiatry programs are located inside these schools. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received comprehensive healthcare training with a concentration on conditions pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are qualified to manage issues extending from commonplace afflictions for instance fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical training which provide them the skill necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it easy for a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of many troubles which the feet routinely experience.
