Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists devote about ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and several podiatry programs are located inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received thorough medical training with a main focus on problems regarding the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to handle issues ranging from commonplace problems such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more complicated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical education which give them the practical experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those troubles that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations makes it easy for a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and help prevent many conditions which the feet normally encounter.
