Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists invest an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to usual medical school and in fact various podiatry training programs lie inside these institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired extensive medical education with a main focus on complications regarding the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to treat problems ranging from typical conditions like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more complex such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical training which provide them the prior experience needed to execute surgery on those issues that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait abnormalities empowers a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and help prevent many problems which the feet frequently encounter.
