They spend about a decade in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and actually many podiatry programs are contained inside these schools. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have obtained comprehensive medical education with a stress on issues regarding the ankles and feet. They are trained to handle problems varying from basic disorders for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more challenging like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have thorough surgical education which furnish them the prior experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations facilitates a Podiatric doctor to develop shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and defend against countless complications which the feet commonly experience.
