Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists put in approximately ten years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and actually several podiatry programs are located inside these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have gained significant medical training with a concentration on concerns concerning the feet and ankles. They are educated to treat difficulties extending from normal ailments for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more challenging including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical training which provide them the experience needed to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Comprehending biomechanics and gait deviations enables a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and minimize the risk of numerous issues which the feet frequently encounter.
