Doctors at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They put in about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to standard medical school and in point of fact several podiatry training programs are located within these schools. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received considerable medical instruction with an emphasis on problems involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to care for conditions extending from commonplace problems such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more intricate such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which give them the expertise necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those concerns that are best managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and minimize the risk of countless complications which the feet normally encounter.
