Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They put in an average of ten years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and many podiatry programmes are located within these schools. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
Upon the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have acquired comprehensive medical education with a main focus on complications regarding the feet and ankles. They are trained to treat complications ranging from simple problems such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have considerable surgical education which supply them the prior experience essential to perform surgical treatment on those concerns that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait peculiarities facilitates a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and defend against countless problems which the feet frequently experience.
