Medical doctors here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists put in an average of ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact numerous podiatry programs are contained inside these academic institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have acquired substantial medical training with a concentration on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to address problems extending from typical ailments for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more sophisticated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical training which provide them the practical experience necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities makes it possible for a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and prevent many problems which the feet frequently experience.
