Medical doctors here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend about ten years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact quite a number podiatry programs are contained inside these academic institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received considerable health care training with a focus on problems involving the ankles and feet. They are qualified to treat complications ranging from normal problems for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have considerable surgical instruction which furnish them the prior experience necessary to execute surgical treatment on those concerns that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and reduce the chances of many complications which the feet routinely experience.
