Medical professionals at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have received extensive medical training with a focus on issues concerning the ankles and feet. They are instructed to deal with problems extending from basic afflictions for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are a lot more obscure for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical instruction which supply them the experience necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to create shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and reduce the chances of many complications which the feet usually experience.
