Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie provide services for the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend around 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles conventional medical school and several podiatry programmes lie within these academic institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received encompassing health care training with a stress on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to treat concerns stretching from regular afflictions such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical training which give them the experience needed to perform surgery on those conditions that are ideally managed through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems facilitates a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and defend against many problems which the feet typically encounter.
