Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend an average of 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles typical medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programs are contained within these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have obtained significant healthcare instruction with an emphasis on complications pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are trained to deal with issues ranging from commonplace afflictions like ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more complex including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical training which provide them the expertise required to perform surgical treatment on those concerns that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems enables a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of many problems which the feet usually encounter.
