Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in around 10 years in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles typical medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes are contained within these academic institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.

At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained significant health care training with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to treat problems ranging from normal afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more complex like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical training which provide them the experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.

Our Doctors likewise have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait irregularities empowers a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and prevent many conditions which the feet commonly encounter.
