Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists devote approximately ten years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to regular medical school and actually quite a number podiatry programmes are located inside these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received thorough medical training with a main focus on problems involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are instructed to deal with problems ranging from commonplace problems for instance fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are far more obscure for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical training which supply them the experience required to perform surgical treatment on those concerns that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait deviations allows a Podiatric physician to develop shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and avoid a large number of complications which the feet routinely encounter.
