Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend about 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles conventional medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are contained within these institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have obtained considerable healthcare training with a focus on conditions pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are instructed to address problems extending from common problems for instance ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more complicated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical education which provide them the practical experience needed to carry out surgery on those complications that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against many complications which the feet usually experience.
