Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend an average of ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to typical medical school and as a matter of fact several podiatry programmes are located within these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have gained extensive health care education with a main focus on difficulties concerning the feet and ankles. They are taught to care for conditions ranging from typical problems such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more intricate for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which provide them the experience required to execute surgery on those concerns that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations enables a Podiatric doctor to create footwear and orthotics which can offer pain relief and defend against many problems which the feet commonly experience.
