Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. They put in an average of ten years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and several podiatry programs are located within these academic institutions. After getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received encompassing medical training with an emphasis on concerns pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are taught to treat complications extending from simple conditions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are more puzzling for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical education which give them the prior experience necessary to carry out surgery on those troubles that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems makes it easy for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and minimize the risk of many complications which the feet routinely encounter.
