Physicians at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. They devote an average of a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to regular medical school and several podiatry programmes are contained within these institutions. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received significant health care training with a focus on issues pertaining to the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are instructed to treat complications ranging from standard afflictions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more obscure including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical instruction which give them the experience needed to perform surgery on those problems that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors furthermore have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatric physician to create footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and avoid a large number of problems which the feet normally encounter.
