Medical doctors at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists devote approximately a decade in learning, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and as a matter of fact a number of podiatry programs are contained within these schools. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained encompassing healthcare education with an attention to on problems involving the feet and ankles. They are trained to treat problems ranging from simple problems such as ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more puzzling including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have significant surgical training which supply them the experience necessary to carry out surgery on those problems that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations empowers a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and minimize the risk of many troubles which the feet routinely experience.
