Doctors at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists spend around ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received considerable medical training with a stress on complications involving the ankles and feet. They are instructed to treat concerns varying from commonplace problems for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more intricate such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical instruction which furnish them the prior experience necessary to execute surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally handled through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Comprehending biomechanics and gait deviations makes it possible for a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of numerous troubles which the feet typically encounter.
