Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles standard medical school and a number of podiatry programmes are located inside these institutions. Upon acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have acquired extensive healthcare education with an emphasis on issues concerning the feet and ankles. They are trained to treat conditions varying from basic conditions for example, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more intricate like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical instruction which supply them the prior experience necessary to perform surgery on those issues that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations makes it possible for a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and avoid many complications which the feet commonly experience.
