Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors devote an average of a decade in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and various podiatry training programs are contained within these schools. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained wide-ranging healthcare training with a stress on complications involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to handle complications varying from common problems for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more challenging including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical education which provide them the practical experience needed to conduct surgery on those concerns that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors likewise have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics that can offer pain relief and avoid many problems which the feet routinely encounter.
